TIFF Group Announces Canada's Top Ten
Each year the Toronto International Film Festival Group selects Canada's Top Ten, then screens the films and holds panel discussions at Cinematheque Ontario located at the Art Gallery of Ontario's Jackman Hall, 317 Dundas Street West, Toronto. The list was announced this morning on their website.Feature Films
- L'Âge des Ténèbres - Denys Arcand
- Amal - Richie Mehta
- Continental, Un Film Sans Fusil - Stéphane Lafleur
- Eastern Promises - David Cronenberg
- Fugitive Pieces - Jeremy Podeswa
- My Winnipeg - Guy Maddin (pictured right)
- A Promise to the Dead: The Exile Journey of Ariel Dorfman - Peter Raymont
- The Tracey Fragments - Bruce McDonald
- Up The Yangtze - Yung Chang
- Young People Fucking - Martin Gero
This list is a great grouping of films I caught in Toronto and loved (THE TRACEY FRAGMENTS; MY WINNIPEG), films by filmmakers I admire (L'ÂGE DES TÉNÈBRES; FUGITIVE PIECES; EASTERN PROMISES) and films that I either read about at the festival and would love to see, or films I know nothing about. In addition to the films, some of the panels being offered sound terrific. Directors Bruce McDonald and Cam Christensen will discuss the use of music in their films and the appropriately titled "Music and Film." Producer Robert Lantos will discuss bringing EASTERN PROMISES and FUGITIVE PIECES to the big screen. Richie Mehta (AMAL), Stephane Lafleur (CONTINENTAL, UN FILM SANS FUSILL) and Martin Gero (YOUNG PEOPLE FUCKING) will discuss their experiences making their debut features. Makes you want to visit Toronto again, doesn't it?
