Almodovar's VOLVER

I can't believe I haven't heard of this until now, but venerable Spanish auteur Pedro Almodovar has a new film coming out! VOLVER (To Return) is about "three generations of women who survive wind, fire and even death, thanks to audacity, goodness and a limitless vitality." It stars Penelope Cruz (who's always better in Spanish-speaking roles), but more significantly, it's the director's first film with Carmen Maura (his legendary leading lady throughout the 1980s) since WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN.

Sony Pictures Classics is releasing VOLVER in the U.S. in late June. The distributor is also supposedly launching a major retrospective of Almodovar's work beforehand that will include the never-available-on-DVD classic LAW OF DESIRE--which, come to think of it, might make a fabulous double bill with TRANSAMERICA.

Chris, I am so glad you posted about this. I've known about it for awhile, but haven't mentioned anything for some reason. I am very excited because Carmen Maura is my favorite of the Almodovar stable of actresses, and it's so exciting that they're working together again after such a long time (and an notorious falling out.)
