Chlotrudis Tuesday Night at the Movies + Indie Film Round-Up May 14 - 20

Hello Chlotrudis Members!

Vicki takes the hosting duties this week, so join her for the Chlotrudis Tuesday Night at the Movies for the 7:30 screening of Catherine Breillat's BLUEBEARD at the Brattle Theatre! Breillat is the provocative filmmaker responsible for such polarizing films as THE LAST MISTRESS, ANATOMY OF HELL, SEX IS COMEDY, FAT GIRL and ROMANCE. This film is sure to inspire some lively conversation! Join Vickki at 5:45pm for dinner at Cambridge 1. Remember, bring your Chlotrudis membership card and receive a discount on your ticket!

BluebeardBoudoir philosopher Catherine Breillat’s (The Last Mistress, Fat Girl, Romance) bloody chamber piece takes an outrageously deadpan approach to Charles Perrault’s grisly bedtime story about the aristocratic ogre who marries and murders a series of wives. Her Bluebeard is a middle-aged behemoth, easily four times the size of his child bride. The fairytale is acted out in a 16th century setting and explicated, often hilariously, by a contemporary pair of young sisters. The more sexually curious of the two is named Catherine and the movie’s double ending, while not exactly Perrault’s, is pure Breillat … A perversely chaste and highly personal adaptation of Perrault’s classic fairytale. – notes from the New York Film Festival

Director: Catherine Breillat

Cast: Dominique Thomas, Lola Créton, Daphné Baîwir

Leap of FaithThe Boston Jewish Film Festival reprises the best of last year's festival in their Encores and More series. Next week, on Thursday, May 20, and Sunday, May 23 at the Museum of Fine Arts, join them for the documentary LEAP OF FAITH, directed by Anthony Benjamin and Steven Z. Friedman. Filmmaker Anthony Benjamin will be present at Sunday screening

Please GiveFinally, don't miss Nicole Holofcener's wonderful film PLEASE GIVE. It's the latest from the talented director of WALKING AND TALKING, LOVELY AND AMAZING, and FRIENDS WITH MONEY, and it plays this week at the Coolidge Corner Theatre and Kendall Square Cinema. Sly, funny, and surprisingly moving, PLEASE GIVE features another terrific performance by frequent Holofcenter collaborator Catherine Keener. Kate (Keener) has a lot on her mind. There’s the ethics problem of buying furniture on the cheap at estate sales and marking it up at her trendy Manhattan store (and how much markup can she get away with?). There’s the materialism problem of not wanting her teenage daughter (Sarah Steele) to want the expensive things that Kate wants. There’s the marriage problem of sharing a partnership in parenting, business and life with her husband Alex (Oliver Platt) but sensing doubt nibbling at the foundations. And there’s Kate’s free-floating 21st century malaise—the problem of how to live well and be a good person when poverty, homelessness, and sadness are always right outside the door.

See you at the Movies!

Michael
