This year, the Chlotrudis Society for Independent Film bestowed the most accolades upon Wes Anderson's MOONRISE KINGDOM and Stephen Chbosky's THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER at its 19th annual Chlotrudis Awards ceremony, held at the Brattle Theater this past Sunday.   Both films won 3 awards:  

Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Ensemble went to MOONRISE KINGDOM, while THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER nabbed Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor (for Ezra Miller), and one of the night's top honors, Best Movie. | Read more »

The nominees for the 19th annual Chlotrudis Awards were announced tonight at a special party at Post 390, attended by Chlotrudis members, guests and various folk active in the Boston film scene.  2012 was a good year for American indie films, 18 of the 35 unique films nominated coming from the U.S.  Those 18 films made up 41 of the total nominations.  Films from Frances had the next largest impact with 7 nominations from 3 films, and surprisingly, Belgium took in 6 nominations with just 2 films.  All-in-all, 19 countries were represented among the nominees.  Despite the high number of U.S. films garnering nominations, only 2 of the films nominated for Best Movie was U.S.-made:  BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD and THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER. | Read more »

THE ARTIST, the French black & white silent that has taken the film award season by storm, completed the circuit by winning three Trudies, including Best Movie, last Sunday at the 18th Annual Chlotrudis Awards.  However, it did not dominate the evening as it did the Oscars – it won no acting awards, picking up instead Best Cinematography and Best Production Design. Three other films came close to tying, or besting THE ARTIST’s tally, finishing the night with two awards each.  | Read more »

Nominations for the 18th annual Chlotrudis Awards were finalized by the film group’s nominating committee last weekend.  At the top of the heap, collecting Best Film, Director, Actor and Actress nods among its 7 nominations was the silent people can’t stop talking about, THE ARTIST.

Four other films received 4 or more nominations, including fellow Best Movie nominees ANOTHER YEAR, director Mike Leigh’s latest, and the low-budget independent WEEKEND (pictured left), both clear-eyed studies of relationships in today’s England, featuring acting tour de forces. The other front runner films are Lars von Trier’s dystopian MELANCHOLIA and MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE, with its impressive directorial and lead actress debuts. | Read more »

It was a big weekend for Chlotrudis as nominations for the 17th annual Chlotrudis Awards were finalized by the nominating committee. Leading the pack is Debra Granik’s stunning WINTER’S BONE, with 8 nominations, including Best Movie, Best Director and Best Actress. Five other films received 4 or more nominations, including fellow Best Movie nominees THE KING’S SPEECH, starring Colin Firth & Geoffrey Rush; Quebecois wunderkind Xavier Dolan’s I KILLED MY MOTHER; JACK GOES BOATING, Philip Seymour Hoffman’s directorial debut; and MOTHER, the latest from Korea’s Joon-ho Bong. Rounding out the category is the Peruvian ghost story, UNDERTOW. In all, 40 films received nominations; 20 countries were represented, with US films making up just over 30%. Celebrating the yet-to-be discovered treasures of the independent film world, Chlotrudis and the Brattle present CINE-CACHÉ, a new bi-weekly series of film and discussion, every other Monday night September 27, 2010 through January 3, 2011. Special screenings of sneak previews, festival favorites, regional features, and overlooked gems that haven’t played Boston are the kinds of films you’ll see in this exciting series. Filmmakers will be in attendance on select evenings and discussions will be held after all screenings.

The Chlotrudis Society for Independent Film is excited to announce that World Wide Motion Pictures Corporation has picked up Danish film APPLAUSE for U.S. release in early December, and we are working with the distribution company to spread the word.  Chlotrudis members will want to see Paprika Steen's show-stopping, performance as a popular actress struggling to control her alcohol addiction. Hello Chlotrudis Members!

This week Chlotrudis recommends a couple of new indie releases playing in Boston. For those of you who like gritty, yet magical stories set on the streets of Dublin, KISSES is for you. Chlotrudis members caught this wonderful little film at the Provincetown International Film Festival way back in 2009! We're very happy to see it get a Boston release courtesy of the Coolidge Corner Theatre. Kylie and Dylan are two kids living in a bleak suburb of Dublin. After an altercation with a parent, the two run away and spend a frightening yet magical night in the big bad city. It's really a special film, so please overlook the fact that it's playing in the Screening Room and go see it! The other new release that's worth a look is LIFE DURING WARTIME, Todd Solondz sequel of sorts to the Chlotrudis Awards-winning HAPPINESS. Some time has passed since the startling conclusion of HAPPINESS, and the characters are all played by different actors, but even if the particulars of the first film are a bit fuzzy in your memory (as they were in mine) the feel and themes of these characters lives will quickly come back to you. LIFE DURING WARTIME is slightly more gentle than HAPPINESS, or perhaps, with over ten years distance, slightly more mature. Plus it's got some outstanding performances by Allison Janney, Shirley Henderson and delightfully amusing turns by a host of supporting actors like the ever-interesting Ally Sheedy and a fierce Charlotte Rampling. Check it out at the Kendall Square Cinema (or wait a week and catch it at the Coolidge!)
